Interested in how dogs can support your OT practice?
Join OTD student, Desiree Lehrke on July 29th at 12:00pm PST to explore the role of dog-assisted services in occupational therapy. Learn how therapy, service, and support dogs can enhance client care—and when to integrate or refer for best outcomes.
This session explores how dog-assisted services—including therapy, service, facility, and emotional support dogs—can be integrated into occupational therapy (OT) across diverse settings and client populations. Participants will learn to differentiate between types of dog services, understand their clinical applications, and identify when integration or referral is appropriate. This topic is especially relevant for OT practitioners and students interested in innovative, client-centered approaches. Through educational content and guided reflection, the session aims to enhance participants’ knowledge and confidence in utilizing or recommending dog-assisted services to support meaningful engagement in occupational therapy practice.

Speaker Bio: My name is Desiree Lehrke, and I am a third-year and I am an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) student at Touro University Nevada, graduating in 2025. My professional interests include working in inpatient rehabilitation and hand therapy.
For my capstone project, I focused on educating the occupational therapy (OT) community on how to integrate dog-assisted services across a variety of therapeutic settings and client populations. The project aims to raise awareness of the different types of dog services, demonstrate their real-world applications, and highlight their clinical value—encouraging occupational therapists to incorporate these interventions when appropriate or to refer clients to reputable training organizations, such as my community partner site, Michael’s Angel Paws.
