Support AB106: Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact

We urge you to support Assembly Bill 106 (AB106), which establishes the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact. This critical legislation will improve access to occupational therapy services, reduce barriers to practice, and support workforce mobility for occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs). The OT Compact is a state-driven solution that allows licensed OTPs to practice across state lines without the need for multiple licenses, while maintaining strong public safety protections and state oversight.

Why Support AB106?

  • Streamlined Licensure Process for OTPs: The OT Compact allows occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) to practice across state lines without obtaining multiple state licenses, reducing administrative burdens and costs.
  • Increased Access to Occupational Therapy Services: By enabling OTPs to practice in multiple states, the Compact addresses workforce shortages and improves access to care, especially in underserved and rural areas.
  • Robust Oversight and Public Safety: Practitioners must meet strict eligibility criteria, including holding a valid license, passing a criminal background check, and adhering to state-specific jurisprudence requirements. Member states retain the authority to take adverse action against practitioners, ensuring patient safety and accountability.
  • Efficient Information Sharing: The Compact establishes a secure data system to facilitate information sharing among member states, enhancing transparency and coordination while protecting practitioner privacy.
  • Improved Continuity of Care for Patients: Patients receiving telehealth services or relocating to another state can continue working with their trusted OTPs without interruption, which is especially important for individuals with chronic conditions or long-term therapy needs.
  • Alignment with Interstate Compacts in Other Professions: The OT Compact follows the successful model of interstate compacts in other healthcare professions, such as nursing and physical therapy. This ensures consistency and familiarity for states adopting the Compact.
