Session Description:
This course is best for practitioners or students looking to expand their understanding on how to apply trauma-informed skills into occupational therapy practice. Participants will be given a brief overview on basic trauma-informed care principles and then have the opportunity to apply their understanding through various case studies and personal experiences. Participants will also learn how vicarious stress can impact the occupational therapy practitioner and will be given specific strategies to combat these negative effects.
Course Objectives
1. Participants will be able to describe trauma, key principles of trauma-informed approaches, and the OT practitioner's role on the interdisciplinary team when treating survivors of trauma.
2. Participants will be able to demonstrate the application of trauma-informed care strategies through the use of case scenarios.
3. Participants will be able to describe vicarious stress and specific strategies to prevent secondary negative effects.
Speaker Bios:
Amanda Godfrey OTD, CCTS-I:
Amanda is a recent graduate from Touro University Nevada who currently is studying for the boards and applying to various settings. Her doctoral capstone involved the creation of a tool used to screen and address trauma in adult populations. She is passionate about accessible mental health treatment for patients in community settings and sees the importance that OTs can play to fulfil this gap in care. She is certified through Trauma Institute International as a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist- Individual (CCTS-I).
Johnny (John) Rider, PhD, MS, OTR/L, MSCS, CEAS:
Johnny is an Associate Professor at Touro University Nevada. He is a Mental Health First Aid instructor and works as a community-based therapist for Good Life Therapy, LLC. He has published and presented on trauma-informed care across practice settings and is passionate about the powerful role OT practitioners can play in trauma-informed approaches.
