Course Eval and CEU Form
Course Objectives:
- Describe key relevant terms and definitions related to gender care - Illustrate the health disparities, barriers and implicit bias among healthcare providers.
- Examine the medical transition process and surgical treatments for transgender individuals
- Identify opportunities to support client-centered care to facilitate occupational performance issues of transitioning and gender dysphoria in general
I will cover the transition process and the barriers experienced by these individuals. Since UMC is the only hospital that admits these cases, maximizing this opportunity to educate OTs about transgender acute care practice. My vision is for the profession to initiate further research studies on LGBT to increase knowledge and understanding. Although my initial target audience is OT practitioners, it can also benefit other disciplines. As we continuously develop this program, I hope that we can improve referral pathways and direct available resources to assist them with their needs.
Speaker Bio: Marie has been practicing as an OT since 1998, working in multiple academic and clinical settings in the Philippines, Singapore, and the US. She has completed her Masters degree in Health Professions Education from the University of the Philippines and is in her second year as a post-professional OTD student at UNLV. She has earned certifications in aging in place and home modifications. Her family has lived in Las Vegas for five years, escaping the brutal snow on the east coast. They have since fallen in love here because of the vast opportunities and cultural diversity. Marie is presently working at UMC Hospital and has collaborated with nursing to develop orthopedic joint and transgender care programs. Working in a Level 1 trauma center offers a myriad of clinical initiatives. Her interests in primary care and community-based OT hope to open more advocacy opportunities to tap into niche areas and develop systems that target underserved and marginalized populations.
