AOTA Response to COVID-19

AOTA-Logo-Resp.gif

The continued spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has sparked concern in the occupational therapy profession regarding practice, options for delivering quality therapy services and complying with new regulatory requirements while doing our part to "flatten the curve," and academic requirements for educators and students.

We know that many practitioners, educators, and students are experiencing considerable unknowns and fears. While we do not have immediate answers to every question at this time, we do know this: we will get to the other side of this pandemic by using our innate problem-solving skills, by coming together to advocate for the continued value of occupational therapy, and by recognizing that this challenging time may create new opportunities for occupational therapy practice now and in the future.

The COVID-19 situation is evolving rapidly, and we are evaluating and shaping direction daily. AOTA staff are working to explore your concerns, seek answers to your questions, and advocate on your behalf. Our first priority is to facilitate the information sharing, guidance, and advocacy that will equip you to navigate through complex situations:

  • Get Information and Guidance from the AOTA Coronavirus Resource Center—Our resource center addresses frequently asked questions from practitioners, educators, and students. Here we are addressing issues such as telehealth, ethics, and student fieldwork.
  • Complete a Quick Survey to Share Your Experience—Please complete an 8-question survey to share how coronavirus is impacting you. Your insights will inform AOTA's advocacy and planning.
  • Give and Get Support from Your OT Community—Social distancing is not required on CommunOT! Come online to share your questions and experiences, and help your peers problem solve through similar situations.
  • Advocate for Telehealth Services—Although the Trump Administration expanded Medicare E-visit coverage for occupational therapy services in response to COVID-19, the ongoing restriction of telehealth services has never had greater impact than now, as practitioners seek to find new ways to provide services.AOTA continues to advocate for coverage of telehealth services at the state and federal levels. Join and support these efforts by visiting AOTA's Legislative Action Center.

We will inform you regularly of new developments and guidance, and we invite you to direct your Coronavirus-related questions and insights tocoronavirus@aota.org.

AOTA Items

AOTA, APTA and ASHA are advocating with CMS to allow therapy to be provided via telehealth (the E-visits are not considered telehealth by CMS, for more details on Evisits.

The CAREs act could be helpful on this front, see the first blurb related to telehealth in this update.
