Course Description:

This 1-hour interactive session takes you on a deep dive into the world of early life adversity and pediatric medical trauma and introduces you to the science and soul of trauma informed developmental care. Learn how to assess the traumatic stress experience of infants, families, and others through the neurosequential model.  Explore and debunk myths
related to the needs of infants and families in crisis as you discover the power of human connection as a core strategy to buffer the experience of trauma for babies, children,families, and others.

Objectives:

1. The learner will describe the biology of toxic stress and early life adversity.
2. The learner will list 3 adverse consequences associated with early life adversity and toxic stress.
3. The learner will identify 3 best practices to mitigate and manage the experience of toxic stress and early life adversity for infants and families in crisis.


Speaker Biography:

Mary E. Coughlin, MS, NNP, RNC-E, a global leader in neonatal nursing has pioneered the concept of trauma informed, developmental care as a biologically relevant paradigm for babies, families, and professionals.


Ms. Coughlin has over 35 years of nursing experience beginning with her 7 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corp and culminating with her current role as president and founder of Caring Essentials Collaborative, an organization committed to transforming the experience of healthcare for babies and families around the globe through a trauma informed paradigm.


Ms. Coughlin is a published author. Her work includes the seminal paper introducing the concept of core measures for developmentally supportive care, national and international peer -reviewed papers and most recently Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU: Evidence-
Based Practice Guidelines for Transdisciplinary Neonatal Clinicians endorsed by NANN as well as the 2nd edition of Transformative Nursing in the NICU – Trauma Informed, Age-appropriate Care.

In her role as president of Caring Essentials Collaborative, Ms. Coughlin has educated, inspired, and empowered more than 30,000 interdisciplinary clinicians from over 20 countries to transform the experience of healthcare for infants, children, and families.


Most recently, Ms. Coughlin and her interdisciplinary faculty have created an assessment- based certificate program endorsed by the NIDCAP Federation International, the National
Association of Neonatal Nurses, the Council of International Neonatal Nurses, and the National Association of Perinatal Social Workers in accordance with standards established by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, to distinguish individuals as Trauma Informed Professionals.
